This Thursday – 29 January – could be the last chance for Southborough residents to express their views about the fate of the Royal Victoria Hall (RVH).
At their next meeting Southborough Town Councillors will be presented with an 8,000 plus petition by the Friends of the Royal Victoria Hall which asks the Council ‘to keep the RVH theatre open until the designs for the re-development of the area referred to as the “Southborough Hub” have been published and approved’.
Councillors will then go on to make decisions which could mean that control of the Hub project is passed away from the town. The RVH could then be demolished – in favour of a modern development – without any further public consultation.
Labour Councillors have submitted a motion
that backs ‘part refurbishment, part development of the Royal Victoria Hall’ and further consultations with residents before any final plans are agreed.
Labour Cllr Dianne Hill urges anyone who is interested in saving the RVH to show their support outside Southborough Council offices from 6pm before the meeting starts at 7pm.
‘This is an important opportunity for people to show their feelings. It could be the last chance to influence this big decision. Councillors need to be shown the strength of support in the town, and across the Borough, for a renovated and improved RVH. And the support for a well managed community facility that meets the needs of Southborough and High Brooms residents in the 21st Century.’
